Blade and Steel
The Lance is never the mainstay of the knight. He only uses it on the charge.
It is his sword and shield tht keeps him alive.
The Steel of the BLade is kept sheath in peace time. It is never drawn even in the jousting competition unless it is a sword melee competition, of which, blunted weapons and not the knight's sword would be use.
